A guide to dental implants and missing teeth

Dental implants are a modern and predictable way for a dentist to replace missing teeth. Whether you have lost one tooth, some teeth, or even all of your natural teeth, at Elmsleigh House in Farnham we will find the perfect implant solution for you.

How dental implants work

Every tooth has two parts: a crown and a root. Whilst traditional bridgework and standard dentures replace the crowns of any lost teeth, they don’t replace the roots. Dental implants are, in effect, bionic tooth roots, which will hold any new teeth you may require firmly in place.

To place dental implants requires minor oral surgery, which is carried out here at Elmsleigh House dental practice in Farnham under local anaesthetic or conscious sedation, depending on your preference.

In most cases, a healing period of a few months is needed after your dental implants are placed, to give them time to heal and mesh with your jaw bone. During that time your implants will form a bond with your bone akin to that of natural tooth roots, so that your new teeth – crowns, bridges, or dentures – will remain firmly in place at all times.

Increasingly, however, dentists are able to immediately “load” your implants (place temporary teeth on them) so that you won’t be left with any gaps during the healing period. When you come into our Farnham clinic, your dentist will assess your situation and discuss whether immediate teeth is appropriate in your case.

The advantages of dental implants

At our Farnham clinic, we are keen to point out the many advantages dental implants have when compared with other tooth replacement options. One of the key points is their integration with the jaw bone; not only does this ensure your teeth are held securely in your mouth, but also it helps to prevent the common problem of bone loss, because implants support bone growth.

With dental implants you will be able to eat whatever you wish, making it easier to maintain good nutrition, and can speak, laugh, and smile with confidence.
