Are 'selfies' ruining our smile?

Are 'selfies' ruining our smile?

Professor Colin Jones, a historian who wrote The Smile Revolution, reported at the Hay Festival that technology has brought about a cultural change to the way people smiled. He said that when selfie sticks were first used, people would smile 'like a Cheshire cat'.

Over time, the trend has developed for an ironic smile; "This is where the duck face comes in" said Professor Jones as he described "a caved in look...slightly sucked in cheeks".

Professor Jones from Queen Mary University of London wrote in his book examining the history of the smile that "future historians will be very interested looking back at this era." He reflected that it will be interesting to "look back at how social media changes the way we present".
