Sealants proven effective for cavity prevention

November 11, 2016

As reported in the November issue of Oral Health magazine, the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Paediatric Dentistry state that “Sealants are a proven and effective therapy for preventing cavities in children and teens. The joint report reaffirms that sealants should be a routine part of cavity prevention, as children with sealants are up to 80% less prone to cavities compared to those without them.”

At Elmsleigh House, our aim is to provide a preventive, long-term approach in order to keep your teeth and gums in excellent condition and keep treatment to a minimum. Our hygienists can provide fissure sealants to prevent dental decay in your child, as well as offering preventive advice to ensure your or your child’s teeth remain healthy.

We recommend brushing with a fluoride toothpaste that contains at least 1450 ppm fluoride, as this helps protect teeth from cavities and makes teeth stronger. You should ensure your child does not rinse but spits out the toothpaste, without swallowing any; the longer the fluoride stays in the mouth, the more effective it is in preventing tooth decay.

Sugar has been identified as a major factor in tooth decay. Do not give children drinks containing sugars, including fruit juices, between meals; it is best to encourage them to drink water and to reduce sugar to meal times only. Read the sugar content on packaged food and drinks, and restrict the daily maximum sugar intake to the recommended guidelines: 19g for children aged 4–6; 24g for children aged 7-10; and 30g for all those aged 11 and over (including adults!).

Regular check-ups from a young age will ensure a good oral health routine is established, will help prevent tooth decay and will identify any other problems early; the sooner any problems are found, the quicker they can be resolved.
