Loose dentures? Dental implants could be the perfect solution

Loose dentures? Dental implants could be the perfect solution

Dentures have been around in one form or another for centuries. The modern versions, including those offered by Elmsleigh House Dental Clinic in Farnham, are more comfortable and realistic in both appearance and action than ever before. Yet all too often, people still find themselves struggling as the years go by.

If you’ve lost most or all of the natural teeth in one jaw, dentures are an excellent way to replace them. In their traditional form, however, they only replace the crown portions of lost teeth, and this can lead to problems as the jaw bone starts to recede.

When the tooth roots are missing for some time, the jaw bone is likely to shrink back, and the gum tissue often follows suit. These factors can cause dentures that fitted perfectly when you first got them to become progressively loose over time, and you may find yourself going frequently back and forth to your dentist to have them adjusted.

At Elmsleigh House Dental Clinic in Farnham, we find that denture stabilisation using dental implants is often the perfect solution.

Farnham denture stabilisation

Dental implants both replace the roots of missing teeth and help to prevent the problem of bone loss. They are small titanium screws that are placed directly in your jaw bone in a small operation, which can be carried out under local anaesthetic or conscious sedation at our Farnham clinic.

Your dentures can then be attached to your implants, which will hold them securely in place. Gone will be all the common issues of denture slippage and difficulty eating and speaking – in many ways it will be like having a second chance at a jaw full of healthy teeth.

Typically, to secure a lower denture, two implants are placed at the front of the lower jaw. If you are struggling with your upper denture, three or four implants are commonly used.

You will still be able to take your dentures out to clean them – we will show you how to do this – but otherwise they will stay exactly where they should be, leaving you to get on with your life with a new-found confidence and the ability to eat whatever you want.
