Orthodontic treatment
For orthodontic treatment, which can correct the alignment and position of your teeth, we will refer you to West Street Orthodontics. The team at West Street are able to treat children and adults. Throughout your orthodontic treatment we will remain in close contact with West Street and continue to check your general oral health and your dental hygiene for you.
Orthodontic treatment has evolved rapidly, the latest treatments are discrete and effective. Whatever your age, you no longer need to put up with a less than perfect smile.
Increasingly adults are trying the latest orthodontic treatments to resolve a range of issues with their teeth including:
- To improve the appearance of your teeth and face
- To move your teeth in preparation for crown or bridge work
- To improve the health of the teeth and gums, particularly if overcrowding makes it difficult to clean your teeth effectively
- To improve function, re-aligning your bite, so it’s easier for you to eat
It is vital that you keep your mouth and teeth clean during your orthodontic treatment, this will help you avoid other problems including dental decay, inflamed gums and tooth decalcification. Decalcification is caused by excess plaque. When it occurs you lose the mineral calcium from the surface of your teeth, a possible side effect is white spots appearing on the front of your teeth after your brace is removed.
Clean your brace and teeth thoroughly after every meal, pay special attention to each individual tooth and the gum line around it.
Make sure that you continue to see your dentist and hygienist regularly throughout your treatment. The following products can also help you look after your mouth and brace:

- Total care toothpastes, contain a number of active ingredients and can help control plaque, decay and gum disease as well as freshening your breath.
- Electric tooth brushes, can help you clean your teeth effectively. Your hygienist may be able to recommend special small heads which will make it easier to clean around your braces.
- Interdental brushes can get into the spaces between teeth and around the brackets of a fixed brace.
- Floss threaders, are useful for guiding the floss underneath orthodontic wires.
- Disclosing tablets, contain a harmless dye which stains dental plaque. Your dentist can supply these, they will help you check the effectiveness of your brushing.
- Flouride mouthwash, used regularly these can help prevent decay and decalcification, your dentist or hygienist will recommend the best mouthwash for you.
Will the treatment be uncomfortable?
You will probably feel some discomfort for a few days after your brace is first fitted, and after each adjustment, but this will ease. We generally recommend avoiding hard or chewy food until you are accustomed to wearing your brace.
Will I have to have teeth taken out?
This depends on the overcrowding in your mouth. We avoid removing teeth wherever possible, but sometimes it is necessary to achieve the best result for you. If you need to have teeth removed this treatment will take place at our clinic.
Will I be able to speak normally?
Sometimes, when your brace is first fitted, it can affect your speech and make it difficult to pronounce certain words. Most people soon adapt and can speak clearly again within a few days.
Will I be able to play sports whilst wearing my brace?
If you have a removable brace it’s best to take it out and store it in a brace case. If you have a fixed brace you can ask your dentist about a special sports mouth guard, which is designed to protect your teeth and your brace.
How long will treatment take?
Most people wear braces for 1-2 years, however every case is different, and your unique treatment plan will explain all of the stages of your individual treatment.
