Tooth Whitening
Teeth naturally yellow and discolour over time, but smoking, and drinking tea, coffee or red wine can also cause hard-to-shift stains. Tooth whitening gently removes these stains from the surface of your teeth, leaving them looking cleaner and brighter.
Brightening the colour of your teeth can help you look years younger and normally takes only a few weeks. If you’ve got a special event on the horizon, or simply want to lighten the colour of healthy teeth, whitening could be the best option for you, as it’s totally non-invasive, quick and cost-effective.
Professional whitening is carried out at our clinic by a dentist. Most people will be suitable for external whitening, where gel is applied to the outside of your teeth. When the chemicals in the gel break down, oxygen enters the enamel of your teeth, which whitens them.
Impressions will be taken of your upper and lower jaw, this is the first stage of treatment and these impressions are used to create bespoke tooth whitening trays, which exactly fit over your own teeth.
Our dentist will check the fit of the trays and demonstrate how to safely apply the whitening gel. You will need to regularly wear the mouth trays at home for 30 minutes to one hour at a time. Continue using the trays until you have achieved a shade you are happy with. Depending on how often you undertake the treatment this normally takes two-four weeks.
Over time, and especially if you smoke or drink tea, coffee and red wine, stains may reappear on your teeth. If this happens simply use the trays and gel to ‘top-up’ the treatment, until you’re happy with the colour of your teeth again.
The products we use for tooth whitening are not effective on false teeth, crowns, veneers or fillings (including tooth-coloured fillings), and you may have to consider replacing these with paler ones, that match the new colour of your teeth.

As you get older, your teeth naturally become darker. If you drink tea, coffee or red wine, or consume other foods and drinks with strong colourings, your teeth may become discoloured earlier in life. Another major cause of discolouration is smoking, which can make your teeth appear yellow. Tooth decay and tartar build-up (a hardened form of plaque, which is formed by a film of bacteria on the surface of your teeth) can also contribute to discolouration.
Tooth whitening products can help to lighten your teeth, which in turn can make you look younger. The whitening effects can last from a few months up to three years. This varies from person to person, but it’s simple to ‘top-up’ your tooth whitening with your home-based teeth trays and whitening gel.
Tooth whitening using these gels is the simplest, most effective and least invasive way of brightening the appearance of healthy teeth.

To help your teeth stay as white as possible, you should try to limit the amount of food and drink you consume that could stain them, brush twice a day and visit your dentist regularly.
Your teeth can be stained by certain foods and drinks including tea, coffee and red wine or by smoking. As well as many other health benefits, stopping smoking will help prevent staining and keep your teeth as white as possible. If you're having difficulty giving up smoking, ask your GP or dentist for advice.
Are there any side effects to tooth whitening?
The gels used in tooth whitening occasionally cause tooth sensitivity, the degree of this sensitivity will vary depending from person to person, and some people may also experience gum sensitivity.
If you experience pain or discomfort during the tooth whitening procedure, discontinue the treatment and contact your dentist for advice. Different people react in different ways to medical procedures and medications, and the same is valid for tooth whitening procedures and products.
