A more conservative approach to a renewed smile

February 16, 2021

BG 7.10.20 before smileBG 7-10-20 beforeMrs G had previously come to Elmsleigh House for dental implants 14 years ago, which continue to last. She recently returned to see Hugh Cowley for a dental implant consultation as she felt she now needed six implants to replace her upper front teeth, as they were very worn. She was conscious of clenching and grinding her teeth and wanted to have treatment to improve their appearance as well as for comfort, as her teeth were all now very sensitive.

During the consultation, Hugh sought to determine the cause of the erosion (chemical wear) and attrition (physical wear), and develop a treatment plan for Mrs G. He advised that just a single implant could be used to replace a missing back tooth, which would help take pressure away from the upper worn teeth and improve the function of her mouth. He suggested that Mrs G see dentist Cathleen Perrin to repair the worn teeth rather than replace them.

After a thorough examination, X-rays and discussion, Cathleen determined to repair Mrs G’s worn front teeth as soon as possible with cosmetic bonding, which would protect and minimise sensitivity.

She also would repair or replace some of the existing fillings in the back teeth that had also worn.

She suggested that straightening with anterior alignment orthodontics would further improve the appearance of her crowded upper and lower front teeth.

Cathleen also referred Mrs G to Somayeh Modarres-Simmons, the specialist in endodontics at Elmsleigh House, who performed root canal treatment on a molar.

Cathleen, Hugh and Somayeh worked together to achieve Mrs G’s goal of a more healthy, comfortable mouth, along with improving the appearance of her smile.

BG 18.12.20 after smileBG 18-12-20 afterMrs G is so happy with the results to date that she has decided not to carry on with the suggested anterior alignment orthodontics. She found that the initial bonding completed to protect her teeth had sufficiently improved the look of her smile.

Hugh has placed the single implant and we are waiting for healing to take place before this is restored with a high-quality cosmetic gold and porcelain crown and a new bite guard made to help protect the teeth from further wear.
