Avoid staining food during cosmetic treatments

March 08, 2022

We advise patients who have temporary plastic crowns, tooth-coloured braces and attachments or who are in the process of teeth whitening to avoid staining food and drink, such as curries, red wine, tea and coffee.

Temporary crown

In the picture above, Mr N had a temporary plastic crown fitted while his new high-quality crown was being made. When he returned to have the new cosmetic crown tried in place, Cathleen Perrin found he had eaten turmeric, which had stained his temporary plastic crown yellow! This did not matter due to the definitive crown being ready to fit in place, but is a great example of why we say to avoid staining food and drink during certain cosmetic treatment!

Cfast braces

Cfast cosmetic braces are another example where it is best to avoid staining food and drinks. The clear, plastic brackets are fixed onto your teeth and joined with a nickel-titanium wire, exerting gentle pressure to move the front four to six teeth discreetly and efficiently into position, usually in around 6–9 months.

It is the cream wire or surrounding bracket edges that can become discoloured and stained, so prevention is better. However, the nickel-titanium wires may be changed to a different thickness during review appointments, ensuring the correct pressure is exerted to move teeth into position; in which case, the discoloured wire is replaced.

Teeth whitening

We can improve the colour of your teeth with professional Zoom home care whitening, which is the most proven safe and effective way of lightening discoloured teeth. We use carbamide peroxide whitening gel, which is applied to mouth trays that are made to fit your teeth precisely. The whitening gel penetrates the enamel of your teeth and oxidises the pigment bonds in the dentine, which brightens your teeth without damaging them. It is during the whitening process that you should avoid staining food and drink and avoid smoking, especially for the first 2 hours after whitening.

Stains can reappear on your teeth over time, depending on your eating and drinking habits; to maintain your shade, you can 'top up' the whitening treatment for one or two nights until your desired shade is restored.
