Do your teeth prevent you from smiling because you are concerned about how they look? With advances in technology and cosmetic dentistry, there are an extensive range of treatments that can help you regain confidence in your teeth and smile.

In this blog we outline some treatment options that may be helpful to you.

Teeth straightening solutions

Many adults would like straighter teeth. Overcrowded or gappy teeth can cause a range of problems, including difficulties with biting and chewing and keeping your teeth clean. Your self-confidence may be affected, and you may hide your teeth when you smile. For children, treating problems early will minimise the need for more complex orthodontic treatment in the future.

There are a range of conventional orthodontic treatments, or braces, which can straighten most children’s and adults’ teeth; your dentist should tailor treatment to suit you or your child’s needs, ensuring you are happy with the end result.

For adults there are faster orthodontic systems available, such as Cfast and Inman Aligner, which can substantially reduce the length of treatment time normally associated with conventional orthodontics, while remaining kind and safe to teeth. Both treatments focus on applying gentle pressure to move the front four to six teeth into the correct position, and offer a cost-effective and aesthetically pleasing way to straighten most adults’ teeth.

Teeth whitening to give a brighter smile

Teeth naturally yellow and discolour over time, but smoking and some food and drinks can also cause hard-to-shift stains. Teeth can also be discoloured with speckled enamel, white banding or coloured spots, and can be stained during development by tetracycline, a broad-spectrum antibiotic.

Teeth whitening treatment should be prescribed and monitored by an experienced dentist to ensure you obtain a whiter smile without damaging your teeth. The whitening agent often used to lighten teeth is carbamide peroxide gel, which is applied to mouth trays that are custom made to fit around your teeth precisely; the carbamide peroxide penetrates the enamel of your teeth and oxidises the pigment bonds in the dentine, which brightens teeth without damaging them. Your dentist will prescribe how long you wear your mouth trays at home each day to ensure a safe way to a brighter smile.

Cosmetic treatments to improve your smile

Other cosmetic dental solutions to improve the appearance of your smile include: dental implants to securely replace missing teeth; cosmetic bonding, teeth reshaping and gum contouring to improve the appearance of your teeth and gums; and porcelain crowns, veneers and white fillings to ensure your restorations are natural-looking and long-lasting.

Some dental practices also offer facial aesthetic treatments to reduce lines and ensure a more youthful appearance, which should be administered by a qualified doctor for safe, effective and long-lasting results.
