October is National Orthodontic Health Month with a focus on raising awareness of the importance of orthodontic treatment and oral health.
Orthodontics is a specialised branch of dentistry focused on diagnosing, preventing and treating dental and facial irregularities. While orthodontic treatment used to be with fixed metal braces (often referred to as 'traintracks'), the field has advanced with clear aligners, such as Invisalign, Spark and Angel, that use three-dimensional scanning technology to make a series of clear, removable aligners that move teeth into position or correct the bite. Removable and fixed retainers hold teeth into position.
Orthodontics also includes myofunctional treatments (addressing the effects of habits such as thumb sucking, reverse swallow, incorrect lip and tongue function and mouth breathing) for young children.
Improved oral health: Straightening teeth can significantly enhance oral hygiene. Crooked or crowded teeth are harder to clean, increasing the risk of cavities and gum disease. By aligning the teeth properly, orthodontic treatment makes brushing and flossing more effective, promoting better overall oral health.
Enhanced aesthetic appeal: One of the most visible benefits of orthodontic treatment is the improvement in appearance. A straight smile boosts confidence and self-esteem, which can positively impact social interactions and professional opportunities. Many individuals feel more inclined to smile openly and engage with others once their teeth are aligned.
Better functionality: Orthodontic treatment can correct bite issues, such as overbites, underbites and crossbites. Proper alignment ensures that teeth come together correctly, improving chewing and speaking. This functional improvement can reduce strain on the jaw and alleviate issues like jaw pain and headaches.
Long-term stability: Investing in orthodontic treatment can lead to long-term dental stability. Straight teeth are less likely to shift over time, reducing the need for future dental work. Additionally, a well-aligned bite can minimise wear and tear on teeth, potentially prolonging their lifespan.
Prevention of dental problems: Early orthodontic intervention can prevent more serious dental issues from developing later on. By addressing alignment problems during childhood or adolescence, orthodontists can guide the growth of the jaw and permanent teeth, reducing the likelihood of extractions or other invasive procedures in the future.
Psychological benefits: The psychological impact of having a straight smile should not be underestimated. Many individuals report feeling happier and more confident after completing their orthodontic treatment. This boost in self-esteem can lead to improved social skills and a willingness to participate in activities that may have been avoided due to self-consciousness.
Customised treatment options: Advances in orthodontics have led to a variety of treatment options tailored to individual needs. Traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, lingual braces and now the more recent advances in clear aligners provide patients with choices based on their preferences, lifestyle and specific dental conditions.
National Orthodontic Health Month serves as a valuable reminder of the importance of oral health and the role of orthodontics in achieving it. From improved oral hygiene to enhanced self-confidence, the benefits of orthodontic treatment extend far beyond aesthetics.
Whether for children or adults, seeking orthodontic care can lead to healthier, more beautiful smiles that last a lifetime. As this month unfolds, it’s an excellent opportunity to consider the positive impacts of orthodontics and the difference it can make in your life or the life of someone you love.
