At Elmsleigh House Dental Clinic, we're proud to support National Smile Month 2025, the UK's largest oral health campaign. Running from 12th May to 12th June 2025, this annual initiative by the Oral Health Foundation aims to raise awareness about the importance of good oral health and its impact on overall well-being.

Why oral health matters

Maintaining a healthy smile is more than just aesthetics, it's integral to your overall health. Poor oral hygiene can lead to issues like tooth decay, gum disease and even contribute to systemic conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. Regular dental check-ups, proper brushing and flossing, and a balanced diet are essential components of oral health.

Tips for a Healthier Smile

In celebration of National Smile Month, here are some tips to keep your smile bright and healthy:

  • Brush twice daily: use fluoride toothpaste and brush for at least two minutes, twice a day.

  • Floss daily: remove plaque and food particles in between your teeth with interdental brushes or floss.

  • Limit sugary foods and drinks: reduce the risk of tooth decay by reducing sugar intake and focus on eating healthily to 'Feed your smile'.

  • Use a fluoride mouthwash: incorporate a fluoride mouthwash into your daily routine to strengthen enamel and help prevent cavities.
  • Regular dental visits: Schedule regular dental check-ups and hygiene cleans, at least twice a year. Importantly, our dentists and hygienists perform mouth cancer checks at all routine appointments.

'Feed your smile'

This year's National Smile Month theme, 'Feed Your Smile', highlights the vital connection between diet and oral health. Consuming a balanced diet rich in calcium, phosphorus and vitamin C—found in foods like dairy products, leafy greens and citrus fruits—strengthens tooth enamel and supports gum health.

Crunchy fruits and vegetables, such as apples and carrots, not only provide essential nutrients but also stimulate saliva production, which naturally cleanses the mouth and neutralises harmful acids.

Limiting the intake of sugary and acidic foods and drinks is key, as they can erode enamel and lead to tooth decay. Incorporating a fluoride mouthwash into your daily routine can further protect against cavities by strengthening enamel and preventing plaque build-up.

By making mindful dietary choices and maintaining good oral hygiene practices, you can nourish your smile and contribute to your overall health.
