Our Specialist is a Diamond Invisalign provider

June 15, 2021

KS iTero2We would like to congratulate our Specialist in orthodontics, Kostas Spathoulas, for being awarded Diamond Invisalign provider for the second year! This is an exceptional achievement as it marks that Kostas has straightened over 800 people's teeth with Invisalign, and continues to treat over 200 cases each year. This puts him in the top 1% of Invisalign providers in the UK, and is the only Diamond provider in Farnham and the surrounding area. We are so proud of this achievement, and that Kostas has helped so many people of all ages achieve a straight, healthy smile.

What is Invisalign treatment?

Invisalign is a popular solution for discreet teeth straightening involving a series of clear, removable aligners that move teeth predictably into position in around 6–18 months. Each aligner is worn for 20–22 hours a day for up to two weeks before being replaced by the next in the series, gradually moving your teeth towards the projected final position.

Invisalign can fix a large range of teeth straightening issues for a wide range of ages, such as overcrowded teeth, widely spaced teeth, crossbites, overbites and underbites. Unlike fixed traditional braces, there are no metal brackets or wires; Invisalign clear aligners are made from a lightweight, strong, clear, thermoplastic material that fit precisely over your teeth to predictably move them into position. You just remove them to eat, drink anything other than water, and to brush your teeth.

Using advanced iTero Element 5D scanning technology Kostas Spathoulas, our Specialist in orthodontics, will reveal detailed 3D images of your teeth. He will show you how your teeth will look when in their desired position, and will use the scans to plan and create your series of Invisalign aligners.

For treatments that need more complex movement or adjustments, SmartForce attachments are often used. These are tiny tooth-coloured attachments that are placed on the teeth before or during your Invisalign treatment. Where possible, these attachments will be positioned on the lingual side (back) of your teeth. However, even if placed on the front of the teeth, they are very small and barely noticeable.

SmartForce attachments help your aligners apply the correct amount of force in the right direction. This enables even complex tooth movements to be predictably planned without braces. It is important to note, however, that not everyone who has Invisalign aligners will need SmartForce attachments, but they may be added during treatment to enhance movement.

Interproximal reduction (IPR), or enamel reshaping, may be needed where there is insufficient space to move teeth into position. It may be that you have black triangles where the teeth are touching, or the teeth are too close together and there is not enough space to allow for orthodontic movement. Interproximal reduction is a painless and gentle procedure using a file, disc or bur to reshape the enamel, creating space for the teeth to move during treatment.

Once your teeth have been straightened, Kostas will provide you with retainers to maintain this correction. Permanent fixed retainers will be fitted behind the upper and lower front teeth, and removable retainers will be provided to wear at night as part of the orthodontic treatment to stabilise the teeth in their new position and prevent any future relapse.
