Sarah Mack has launched Little Smiles at Elmsleigh House!

SEM Google revDid you know we now have a Little Smiles children’s dental clinic at Elmsleigh House?

This has evolved as we recognise that for many children the thought of visiting the dentist evokes feelings of unease and fear. Sarah Mack has founded Little Smiles to offer not only advanced dental care but also a compassionate approach to helping children access dental treatment. With designated clinic days on a Saturday, Sarah approaches each child’s dental care journey with patience, empathy and a commitment to building trust.

She will take time to reassure an anxious child, using props to show children what she plans to do in a language they will understand, building a sense of trust. Sarah is a Dental Phobia-certified dentist due to her expertise with anxious patients.

If a child is especially anxious about dental treatment such as fillings or extractions, Sarah may offer inhalation sedation (commonly known as ‘gas and air’) to help access treatment.

Our dental hygienists will be working with Sarah at Little Smiles, offering Airflow technology for a gentle and thorough clean, and fissure sealants to protect.

Beyond treatment, our holistic approach at Little Smiles extends to empowering children (and parents/ guardians) with the knowledge and tools needed for excellent oral health. Little Smiles represents more than just a new clinic; it symbolises our commitment to transforming dental experiences for nervous children. We believe that by instilling good habits early on, we lay the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

To book your child into Little Smiles or for more information, please speak to the Welcome Team on 01252 713797 or our Patient Coordinator, Georgie, on 01252 595503.

A busy few months for our CDT, Professor Bill Sharpling

Professor Bill Sharpling, our clinical dental technician (CDT) with expertise in fixed and removable dentures at Elmsleigh House, has had an exceptionally busy few months!

He has presented at the British Society for Gerodontology winter conference on education and care for the elderly patient and improving quality of life with dentures.

As a College of General Dentistry Council member, Bill was invited to nominate worthy dental professionals for the award of Fellowship of the College. The centre photograph below shows Bill (left) with a group of dental nurses, hygienists, therapists, dental technicians and clinical dental technicians, many of whom were awarded at the event.

Bill also went to Dubai to teach a group of year 3 MClinDent Prosthodontics students about implant-assisted dentures. A subject he excels at helping patients with natural-looking fixed dentures at Elmsleigh House.

Bill has also been invited by the Chief Dental Officer for England to present at the British Dental Industry Association’s event at ExCel on what CDTs can bring to the dental team, sharing examples from Elmsleigh House!

Case study: Sinus lift for a dental implant

Mrs K’s upper left back molar had to be removed as it was decayed and no longer restorable. Kit Spears removed the tooth and planned placement of a dental implant to stabilise her bite and secure a crown. However, her x-ray showed limited bone between her gum and base of her sinus, so he performed a minor sinus lift at the same time as placing the implant in the jawbone under local anaesthesia.

After healing, a crown was made to colour match Mrs K’s adjacent teeth.

Team news!

Dental nurse Becky celebrated her 30th birthday in style, with flowers and a well-suited gift voucher!

Marketing executive Marina celebrated 10 years’ working at Elmsleigh House. Her role has changed over the years from writing and printing brochures, books and newsletters to website management, writing blogs and posting on social media (please follow us and like our posts!).

We are so proud of our runners in the Farnborough Half Marathon - dental nurse Louise who ran with her brother to raise money for Combat Stress, a charity ensuring veterans get mental health support; and dental hygienist Gillian who completed another half marathon before her ultra marathon later in the year!

Several of the team are in training for more runs to come!
