Stabilising dentures with dental implants to maximise comfort

July 27, 2016

Modern dentures have come a long way from the crude and uncomfortable early appliances, first created many centuries ago. At Elmsleigh House Dental Clinic in Farnham we offer custom-made dentures that are designed to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. For many patients, we believe the best option for longevity and comfort is to stabilise your denture with dental implants.

Many of the problems associated with traditional dentures – progressive looseness that causes difficulties in eating, speaking clearly, and can knock your confidence if your teeth have a tendency to slip or fall out – are caused by gradual shrinking of the bone and gum tissue. This happens because there is nothing in place to replace the tooth roots, so the bone and gum may slowly start to shrink back.

Dental implants are bionic tooth roots that help to prevent this problem. After they are placed in direct contact with the jaw bone – which requires minor surgery at our modern Farnham dental clinic – they integrate with the bone, encouraging bone loss whilst simultaneously holding your dentures firmly in position. This means your new teeth will act just like your natural teeth, enabling you to eat a healthy and balanced diet free from restriction, to speak clearly, smile and laugh with confidence.

The dentures we make at our Farnham practice are hand-crafted by our Clinical Dental Technician Frank Johnson, and will be both comfortable and natural in function and appearance. Implants provide an added level of stability, meaning you won’t have to have your teeth relined or adjusted on a regular basis.

It is most common for people to struggle with their lower denture. By placing just two dental implants, your lower denture will be held securely in place. Special connectors will secure your dentures to your implants, and whilst you can still take your teeth out to clean, otherwise they will remain where they should be.

Problems with an upper denture are less common, but if you do experience this your Farnham dentist will use between three or four implants.

Implants and dentures combined can give you back the freedom of a healthy mouth.
