We understand that some people are especially nervous of dental treatment, so we will take time to listen to your concerns and do all we can to put you at ease.
Modern anaesthetic gels rubbed into the gum along with new local anaesthetic techniques ensure our injections cause the minimal discomfort. For especially nervous or dental-phobic patients or those undergoing lengthier procedures such as dental implant treatment, we offer dental sedation options that can make the whole dental experience less stressful.
Inhalation sedation (relative analgesia), more commonly called ‘gas and air’, is the mildest form of sedation, helping you to feel relaxed and at ease during treatment. The mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide is delivered through a nosepiece; it has excellent pain-killing properties and can also reduce the gag reflex – the sensation of choking or feeling sick. As the sedative effect ends when you stop inhaling the mixture, you can drive home after 20-30 minutes.
Intravenous sedation is a stronger sedation that makes you drowsy and comfortable throughout your treatment. Your sedation is carefully maintained and monitored throughout, but its effects will continue after your treatment; you must bring a chaperone as you cannot drive for 24 hours or travel home unaccompanied.
Hugh Cowley is an experienced oral surgeon offering dental implants as well as being a general and cosmetic dentist at Elmsleigh House. Hugh offers both inhalation and intravenous sedation to enable nervous patients to access dental treatment or for comfort during longer treatments such as dental implant placement or tooth extraction.
Sarah Mack is a general and cosmetic dentist as well as being the founder of Little Smiles, our children's dental clinic. With years of experience dealing with anxious young patients, Sarah also offers inhalation sedation to help children access the dental care they need.
Both Hugh and Sarah are Dental Phobia-certified dentists because they offer sedation. However, all of our dentists and specialists have extensive experience dealing with nervous patients and will do all they can to put you at ease.
Our dentists also work with Sedation Solutions to offer sedation options during treatment.
Do not hesitate to talk about your concerns to your dentist or the Welcome Team, so they can alleviate your fears and discuss sedation options with you if needed.
