Orthodontic refinement – Elmsleigh House Dental Clinic

Orthodontic refinement involves small, targeted procedures to perfect your orthodontic results. This may include interproximal reduction (IPR) — also known as enamel reshaping — and the use of attachments, bands or buttons to direct aligners more effectively.

Interproximal Reduction (IPR) / Enamel Reshaping

When there isn’t enough space for teeth to move normally (eg gaps between teeth, tight crowding or 'black triangles'), IPR offers a simple solution:

  • Gentle enamel reduction: A small amount (usually 0.2–0.5 mm per tooth) is carefully removed using files, strips, discs or burs — no drilling or pain, as enamel lacks nerve endings.

  • Space creation: Makes room for aligners to guide teeth into position without extractions.

  • Aesthetic improvement: Reduces black triangles and harmonises tooth shape and smile aesthetics.

  • Safe and effective: When performed properly, IPR does not increase risk of decay or gum disease — studies show enamel remains healthy and protected.

Attachments, Bands and Buttons

To fine-tune tooth movement during Invisalign®, Spark or Angel aligner treatment, small attachments, bands or buttons may be used:

  • Tooth‑coloured attachments: Small attachments bonded to teeth to create anchor points for aligners

  • Orthodontic bands and metallic buttons: Used with elastics to correct bite issues

  • AngelButtons: Built-in to Angel Aligners for flexible, efficient elastic placement — designed with AI-optimised positioning, and smooth 'button' heads for comfort

It may be that no teeth need attachments or only select teeth, and they may be added or removed during treatment to enhance precision.

Why Refinement Matters

  • Improves predictability: Enables precise, controlled tooth movement, reducing treatment variability

  • Avoids extractions: Creates space without removing teeth — ideal for mild-to-moderate crowding

  • Polished results: Addresses residual spacing, minor misalignments or bite imperfections at the end of treatment

Our Approach

  1. Tailored assessment during your orthodontic consultation

  2. Minimal, safe enamel reduction or bonded attachments added as needed during Invisalign, Spark or Angel aligner treatment

  3. Regular reviews to monitor progress and adjust refinements.

  4. Stress-free care, with enamel polishing and full monitoring of oral health.
