Five tips to keep your New Year's resolutions

January 02, 2020

Many people make resolutions to 'go to the gym', 'lose weight', 'stop smoking', 'reduce alcohol' etc. However, many of these good intentions don’t even last until the end of January, often because they aren’t thought through properly, or perhaps because they were made on a whim.

According to research, psychologists have found that we are more likely to keep resolutions if we follow these top five goal-setting tips:

  1. Make only one resolution – focus on one aspect you want to change and make sure this is not the same resolution each year, as this sets you up for frustration and disappointment.
  2. Don’t follow the crowd and go with the usual resolutions – instead think about what you really want out of life and the changes you want to make, for you.
  3. Tell someone else what you would like to achieve – you’re more likely to get support or even just motivation when you share your goal.
  4. Break your goal down into a series of steps needed for success, which are achievable, measurable and time-based. If your New Year’s resolution is to look after your teeth and gums this year, read our five steps to achieving your goal here
  5. Make plans and note your progress through a journal or photographs to keep you motivated, especially as you begin to see yourself ‘before and after’ your New Year’s resolution!

At Elmsleigh House Dental Clinic, in Farnham, we are committed to working with you if your resolution was to improve your or your family’s dental health in 2020.
