Don't let gum disease ruin your love life

February 12, 2019

Scientists at Jinan University in China reviewed five studies on the link between periodontal disease (gum disease) and erectile dysfunction (ED). Recently published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine, the research on 20,000 men found that those with gum (periodontal) disease were 2.85 times more likely to be diagnosed with ED

According to the British Society of Periodontology, more than 45% of adults in the UK are affected by gum disease. Additionally, men over 40 are increasingly likely to experience impotence or ED, although it can affect men of any age.

In a study published last year in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology, researchers from Granada University, Spain, suggested the same type of inflammation in the blood vessels could be a hallmark of both gum disease and ED. They linked the conditions to a protein call CRP, which is produced in the liver and is associated with inflammation and infection. High levels of CRP are also thought to be a risk factor for heart disease.

Gum disease is a serious bacterial infection that destroys the attachment fibres and supporting bone that hold your teeth firmly in place. Early signs are red, swollen gums that bleed easily, but are not normally painful. This early stage of periodontal disease is called gingivitis.

Gingivitis can be prevented or reversed by having regular hygiene appointments, supported with efficient teeth cleaning routines at home.

WARNING SIGNS OF GUM DISEASE

  • Red, swollen, bleeding or receding gums
  • Bigger gaps between the teeth, loose teeth
  • Bad breath or bad taste in the mouth
  • Sensitivity to cold food and drink

Periodontal disease is usually pain free. You may not know you have it until it is discovered by your dentist or dental hygienist. Therefore, regular check-ups are essential to detect and treat periodontal disease.

HOW TO PREVENT GUM DISEASE

  • Clean between your teeth every day with an interdental brush or floss
  • Brush your teeth for at least two minutes, twice a day, with a fluoride toothpaste
  • Avoid smoking, eat a healthy diet high in fruit and vegetables and low in sugar, and exercise
  • Visit your dentist and hygienist regularly, as often as they recommend
  • Control your blood sugar if you have diabetes
