Good oral hygiene helps healing after a heart attack

July 20, 2018

As reported in Oral Health magazine, patients recovering from a heart attack can help their recovery by taking care of their teeth!

A French study found that good oral hygiene helps the cardiovascular system recover after an attack by reducing the bacteria that impair healing. Dr Sandrine Delbosc, study author and associate investigator at Inserm Laboratory for Vascular Translational Science in Paris said:

Our study shows that the bacteria that cause gum disease impair the healing and repair of arteries. This impaired healing may be due to an enzyme produced by the bacteria that stops the body's immune cells from repairing the arteries.

Good oral health could significantly improve the outcome of patients who have an acute cardiovascular event.

So keeping your teeth clean is not only important for your oral health, but also your overall health!

At Elmsleigh House our dental hygiene team will closely monitor the health of your mouth, thoroughly deep clean your teeth using advanced Airflow technology, and offer advice on how to maintain good dental hygiene at home.

Your hygienist will recommend a schedule of hygiene treatment tailored to your individual needs, liaising with your dentist if needed.

If you have a periodontal problem that does not respond to routine care, your dentist will refer you to one of our periodontists – experts in the care of gum and the supporting bone.

Manoj Tank is skilled in both non-surgical and surgical periodontal therapy in the management of periodontal (gum) disease, and is our Specialist in periodontics at Elmsleigh House; Hans-Dieter John is our periodontal and implant surgeon. Together they offer specialist and advanced techniques, including gum grafts, to treat more difficult or advanced gum problems and are familiar with the latest methods of diagnosis and treatment; because of our experience, your dentist may refer you to us for periodontal treatment.

Our team of hygienists work closely with our periodontists and may provide some of the treatment in a collaborative approach to periodontal care.

Ensure your teeth are kept clean and your mouth healthy by booking a hygiene appointment at Elmsleigh House; you can book a hygiene appointment without changing your dentist.
