Are you nervous about dental treatment?

June 19, 2015

At Elmsleigh House we appreciate that anxiety can prevent some people from accessing the dental care they need.

Dental care has come a long way in the past 50 years, and it is now possible to carry out dental work in a comfortable and painless way.

Modern anaesthetic gels rubbed into the gum, along with new local anaesthetic techniques, can make injections painless. For especially nervous or dental-phobic patients we offer sedation options that can make the whole dental experience less stressful.

Inhalation sedation, more commonly called ‘gas and air’ is the mildest form of sedation, helping you to feel relaxed and at ease during treatment. The mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide is delivered through a nosepiece; it has excellent pain-killing properties and can also reduce the gag reflex – the sensation of choking or feeling sick. As the sedative effect ends when you stop inhaling the mixture, you can drive home after 20-30 minutes.

Intravenous sedation is a stronger sedation that makes you drowsy and comfortable throughout your treatment. Your sedation is carefully maintained and monitored throughout, but its effects will continue after your treatment; you cannot drive for 24 hours, or travel home unaccompanied, so you will need to plan ahead.

Do not hesitate to talk about your concerns to your dentist or the Welcome Team, so they can alleviate your fears and discuss sedation options with you if needed.
