Invisalign and whitening to restore a smile

June 15, 2023

Mrs S SEM whitening KS Invis FB

Mrs S came to Elmsleigh House because her upper teeth were crowded. She had had orthodontic treatment as a teenager, but nothing to hold the teeth in position, so they had moved over time.

Mrs S saw Kostas Spathoulas, our Specialist in orthodontics, who performed a thorough dental examination. He found that she had moderate crowding on her upper and lower teeth, a bilateral crossbite between the upper and lower back teeth, and a reduced overbite between her upper and lower front teeth.

Kostas used a state-of-the-art 3D scan and simulation to show how her teeth could be moved into position and her bite corrected using a series of Invisalign clear, removable aligners. Mrs S could see what the planned result would look like before beginning treatment.

Kostas sent the scans and planned treatment to the Invisalign laboratory to make Mrs S her series of clear, removable aligners that would move her teeth into position as per her Invisalign treatment plan.

Mrs S returned five weeks later to be shown how to fit her aligners in place and take home her bespoke set of aligners. Each aligner was worn for a minimum of 20 hours a day for one to two weeks (when they became ‘passive’) before moving on to the next set in the series. Mrs S only removed her aligners to eat, drink hot drinks and to brush her teeth and keep her aligners clean.

Mrs S returned for review appointments every 4–12 weeks for Kostas to check progress and make any amendments, such as interproximal reduction, where polishing strips were used to gently reshape the teeth enamel, creating space for movement. Orthodontic buttons and elastic bands were also used to achieve the bite correction designed via the scan. Orthodontic metallic buttons are small attachments that secure the elastic bands on the teeth. This enables even complex tooth movements to be predictably planned without conventional braces.

Additional scans and refinement aligners ensured progress to achieve the prescribed desired results. Once finalised, Mrs S had a fixed retainer fitted behind her upper and lower teeth to hold them in position. Scans were taken to make Vivera removable retainers to wear at night to help stabilise the teeth and prevent future relapse.

To complete Mrs S’ smile, she saw her dentist, Sarah Mack, for teeth whitening. Sarah showed her how to apply whitening gel to her mouth trays, and gave her sufficient gel to be applied to her trays at home and wear for 4 hours each day, or overnight, until her whiter, brighter shade had been achieved (B1, the whitest natural shade).

The benefit of this treatment was to align and coordinate both dental arches and improve the fullness of Mrs S' smile and her upper smile line, as well as achieving a brighter smile:

“I have been absolutely delighted with the treatment I have received at Elmsleigh House and by the results achieved” Mrs S.
