Look after your family's teeth over easter

April 17, 2025

The Easter holidays are a time for family, fun and, for many of us, a little more chocolate than usual!

While it’s absolutely fine to enjoy seasonal treats, it’s also a time to be mindful of your family’s dental health.

Here are some easy ways to protect smiles over EasteR

🍫 Keep treats to meal times
Rather than grazing on chocolate throughout the day, enjoy sweet treats just after meals. This reduces the number of times teeth are exposed to sugar and takes advantage of the extra saliva produced during meals, which helps neutralise acids and rinse away food particles.

💧 Encourage water over sugary drinks
Water is the best choice between meals – it helps wash away sugar and keeps mouths hydrated. Try to avoid fruit juices or fizzy drinks, which can contribute to tooth erosion.

🪥 Stick to brushing routines
With the excitement of holidays, it’s easy to let routines slip. But brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste is essential – especially before bed. Children under 7 should be supervised to make sure they’re brushing effectively.

🥕 Mix it up with healthier snacks
Balance out the chocolate with tooth-friendly snacks like fruit, vegetables, plain yoghurt, cheese or nuts – these help support overall dental health and reduce sugar exposure.

👩‍⚕️ Book a check-up
School holidays are a great time to schedule your child’s dental check-up. Routine appointments can catch any early signs of problems and help keep smiles healthy and confident. Additionally, mouth cancer checks are performed at all routine dental appointments.

At Elmsleigh House our dentists and hygienists' diaries book up well ahead, so take a moment to book in routine appointments around your work or child's school holidays.
