New dentures for a restored smile

November 08, 2022

Mr K BSH dentures SEM restore FBMr K came to Elmsleigh House because he wanted to restore his teeth with dentures. He saw Sarah Mack for a thorough new patient examination to determine where he was now with his dentition and the best way forwards.

Mr K had missing teeth and an existing bridge on his upper jaw, which had lasted several decades. He had few teeth remaining in his lower jaw, and some pain with a lower tooth, which had recently broken.

Sarah determined that his upper bridge was at high risk of failing, and he had decay in some teeth that needed priority treatment. The x-ray pictures showed signs of infection under his upper right canine tooth, meaning this tooth would require root canal treatment; the alternative option would be to have the tooth removed. He also had signs of staining and tartar (scale) build-up on his teeth that required removal.

Sarah put together a treatment plan to improve Mr K’s existing teeth and restore his missing teeth with dentures.

She first referred him to Professor Bill Sharpling, our Clinical Dental Technician, for a consultation and plan to restore his missing teeth with high-quality dentures. Mr K then saw Sarah to extract his upper right canine and lower left second incisor, and for fillings with hard-wearing tooth-coloured composite bonding material to repair his decayed teeth. He also saw Gillian from the dental hygiene team to remove the tartar and staining using Airflow technology for a deep and effective clean.

Once Mr K had had his two decayed teeth extracted and the filling restorations done by Sarah, he returned to see Bill to make his dentures. At his first consultation, Bill had outlined the denture options available, and Mr K had chosen to proceed with upper and lower Essential chrome dentures.

Essential chrome dentures are made from a chrome alloy that gives strength and accuracy in thin sections. The metal alloy is non-porous; it conducts warmth and coolness so that the wearer enjoys a more natural sensation when eating and drinking. The denture teeth used for the Essential chrome are very hardwearing and natural-looking teeth.

Bill took impressions of Mr K’s teeth so that he could make his dentures, as well as a colour match and photographs to ensure his new teeth would match the colour and look of his natural teeth. Mr K returned to be shown the design and try in a wax ‘mock-up’ of the dentures to ensure he was happy with the fit, shape and position of the teeth, and to check it didn’t effect his speech. As Mr K was happy with the wax mock-up, his denture teeth could be made in acrylic composite.

Mr K returned to have his new dentures fitted and adjusted, and his new dentures were definitively fitted. Mr K checked he was happy with the appearance of his dentures and was able to speak without any problems. Mr K was very happy with the appearance and function of his new dentures, and he now has a healthy mouth and restored smile. He continues to see Sarah for regular dental check-ups and Gillian for regular dental hygiene appointments.
