The basics of caring for your dentures in Farnham

January 22, 2018

Once you decide to get dentures at Elmsleigh House Dental Clinic in Farnham, we will support you through every stage of the process. If you need teeth removed before your dentures can be fitted, this is the first step. After that, we perform a number of procedures to get an accurate picture of the inside of your mouth. We use this to make your dentures.

When we give you your dentures in Farnham, we also let you know how to use them effectively and take care of them so that they last you a long time.

dental-dentures.jpgThe basics of denture care are covered by the following techniques:

  • Rinse - throughout the day and after snacks and meals, you can rinse your dentures to remove larger bits of food, odours and any other debris that may be caught in them. This also helps to give you confidence that your mouth is clean and clear - you can't feel things stuck between your teeth in the same way that you can with natural teeth, so a quick check every now and then helps;
  • Brush - you brush your dentures like you would your teeth except that you can take them out and reach the back more easily. You also need to brush your gums to keep them healthy as well;
  • Soak - overnight soaking helps to remove any debris that has worked its way into the material that your dentures are made out of.

Your dentures should never dry out, so soaking also keeps them moist and prevents this from happening while your gums have a rest overnight.

Monitoring your dentures

You can examine your dentures regularly at home to ensure that they are intact, clean and fresh. It is also important that you keep up with your regular appointments at Elmsleigh House Dental Clinic in Farnham.

Dentures can take some getting used to but, once you have, they should be comfortable and easy to use. If they are not, let us know and we will do what we can to change this for you. It may be that, over time, you dentures feel less effective. This could be solved by a refit to keep them secure.  We also offer denture stabilisation with dental implants to securely hold them in place.
