What is bruxism?

November 06, 2018

Bruxism affects over 10 million adults in the UK. It is broadly characterised by grinding of the teeth and clenching of the jaw that causes tooth wear and breakage, migraines, toothache, aching muscles, jaw and neck pain, and morning headaches. Bruxism occurs in both children and adults, but is most common in 25-44 year olds. However, most people grind and/or clench their teeth occasionally to a certain degree without problem.

Bruxism can occur during the day as involuntary teeth clenching and jaw bracing in reaction to certain stimuli, such as stress. However, nearly 80% of cases occur subconsciously during sleep and are typically associated with stress and anxiety. In fact, studies have shown that during sleep, patients can exert 20% more pressure than is possible while awake, exacerbating any painful symptoms.

Treatment

There are a number of potential treatments for teeth grinding and clenching, including behavioural therapy, muscle relaxation exercises, dental splints, inhibitors and mouth guards. At Elmsleigh House we can make bespoke mouth guards to inhibit grinding, thus greatly reducing the tension that causes migraines, headaches, and jaw and neck pain.

Comprehensive assessment

You can book an hour-long new patient examination at Elmsleigh House, which is a thorough assessment of your teeth, including any x-rays needed. You can discuss any symptoms of bruxism and options for treatment, which will be written up as a comprehensive treatment plan detailing the best solution for you, such as impressions for a bespoke mouth guard to be made to fit precisely and protect your teeth. To book a new patient examination, call the Welcome Team on 01252 713797 or click here to request a callback online.

Whatever your dental concerns, the friendly and experienced dental team at Elmsleigh House can help.
