National Smile Month promotes a healthy mouth

May 27, 2022

May sees Spring in full blossom as we burst into summer and welcome the warmer weather and lighter evenings. May also sees the start of National Smile Month, which runs from 16 May to 16 June this year. This is a charity campaign run by the Oral Health Foundation to raise awareness of having good dental health and promote the value of a healthy smile.

Key messages of National Smile Month

  • Brush your teeth for two minutes twice a day and especially last thing at night with a fluoride toothpaste
  • Clean between your teeth every day with dental floss or interdental brushes
  • Reduce how much and how often you have sugary food and drinks
  • Visit your dentist and dental hygienist regularly.

So if your dental care has lapsed, spring into action and book your dental check-up or hygiene appointment to keep your teeth and gums in excellent condition and help prevent problems developing.

Importantly, mouth cancer checks are performed at all routine appointments, so they are important for your general health as well as your dental health.

To book your dental check-up or specific treatment, call our Welcome Team on 01252 713797, email info@elmsleighhouse.co.uk or click to request a callback online.

Our Dental hygiene team at elmsleigh House

Keeping your teeth clean and gums disease-free is vital for your long-term health. At Elmsleigh House Dental Clinic, our dental hygiene team – Adrienne, Ellen, Gillian and Katrina (see picture below) – offer preventive and restorative hygiene care to all ages.

Regular professional teeth cleaning prevents the build up of plaque and tartar both above and below the gum line, which if left untreated can lead to gum (periodontal) disease. Initial symptoms of gum disease include bleeding gums or bad breath. With treatment it can be controlled, but if left untreated it can eventually lead to tooth loss.

Working in partnership with your dentist or periodontist, our hygienists play an essential role in the successful prevention and treatment of gum disease. They will closely monitor the health of your mouth, thoroughly deep clean your teeth and offer advice on how to maintain good dental hygiene at home.

Your hygienist will recommend a schedule of hygiene treatment tailored to your individual needs, liaising with your dentist or periodontist if needed. If preferred, you can come to Elmsleigh House for dental hygiene treatment only, without changing your dentist.

airflow technology for a gentle and superior clean

Arge 1

Our dental hygienists are trained in Airflow® technology – a modern, minimally invasive technique for a thorough clean that delivers the highest level of comfort, safety and efficiency.

Plaque contains billions of bacteria present as a biofilm on your teeth. If not removed, this can harden into calculus (tartar) and lead to periodontal (gum) disease, which can result in tooth loss.

Airflow technology directs a fine spray of water combined with the finest of antibacterial powders to gently and effectively remove staining, biofilm and young calculus from natural teeth, crowns, fillings, braces, dentures and dental implants (implant crowns, bridges or stabilised dentures). After your Airflow treatment, your teeth will feel smooth, your tongue clean and your whole mouth fresh.

Combined with our hygienists’ expertise, Airflow technology offers an enhanced solution to professional teeth cleaning, ensuring your teeth remain healthy and natural. We believe you will appreciate the difference.
