Case study: An example of ABC dentistry – align, brighten and contour

Miss B KS Invis ABC CP FB

Miss B came to Elmsleigh House as she wanted to improve the appearance of her teeth. She was missing her two upper lateral incisors, resulting in uneven spacing, and had malocclusion, where her top and bottom teeth did not align and her upper dental midline was towards the right.

Align: Miss B saw Kostas Spathoulas, our Specialist in orthodontics, who performed a 3D scan to plan a series of Invisalign clear, removable aligners to close the gaps between her upper teeth, align and correct her bite.

Miss B wore each set of Invisalign aligners for a minimum of 22 hours a day for up to two weeks (until they became passive) before moving on to the next in the series. She only removed them to eat, drink anything other than water and to brush her teeth.

At the end of treatment, a fixed retainer was fitted behind Miss B’s teeth and clear, plastic, removable retainers made for night-time use; these will help hold her teeth into position.

Miss B saw dentist Cathleen Perrin for her general dental care and to complete the appearance of her smile following orthodontic treatment.

Brighten: Cathleen took impressions of her teeth to make whitening trays that fitted Miss B’s aligned teeth precisely. She was shown how to apply whitening gel to the trays and to wear the trays at home for 2–3 hours a day (or overnight) until she achieved the brighter shade desired.

Contour: Once her teeth were whitened, Cathleen was able to improve the look of her smile by using composite bonding material to make her upper canine teeth appear similar to the missing lateral incisors in shape. She matched the tooth-coloured filling material to Miss B’s whiter teeth, and contoured and shaped her teeth to obtain a better look and symmetry to her smile.

Raising awareness of mouth cancer

November is Mouth Cancer Action MonthNovember is Mouth Cancer Action Month, a charity campaign run by the Oral Health Foundation. The aim is to raise awareness of mouth cancer and make a difference by saving lives through early detection and prevention.

Early detection is crucial, so if you have noticed any of these signs or anything unusual in your mouth, please tell your dentist or doctor immediately:

  • Ulcers that do not heal within three weeks
  • Red-and-white patches in your mouth
  • Unusual lumps or swellings in your mouth, head and neck.

Last year, 8846 people in the UK were diagnosed with mouth cancer. Around a third of mouth cancers occur in the tongue, and it is strongly associated with age; more than three in four (91%) mouth cancers are diagnosed in people over the age of 50.

The more we know about mouth cancer, the better chance we have of beating it. This means knowing how to spot mouth cancer early and acting quickly when we see something out of the ordinary by visiting your doctor or dentist.

We don’t know what causes most mouth cancers. However, there are several factors that are likely to increase your risk:

Smoking – around two-in-three (66%) mouth cancers are linked to smoking.

Alcohol – drinking more than 10 units of alcohol a week could increase the risk of mouth cancer by 81%.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) – HPV types 16 and 18 are linked to around three in four (73%) oropharyngeal cancers and more than one in ten (12%) oral cavity and hypopharynx cancers.

It is important to adopt a healthier lifestyle, be aware of what to look out for and see your dentist and hygienist regularly to enable early diagnosis and prompt treatment. Rest assured, our clinicians perform mouth cancer checks at all routine appointments.

Case study: Bone graft and two dental implants to replace two molar teeth

Mrs C Kit 2 implants socket graph

Mrs C saw Kit Spears as she had a cracked upper molar tooth, which needed replacement.

As a cone beam CT scan showed infection that had affected the surrounding bone, Kit extracted the tooth and placed bone graft material into the socket to preserve the bone. After healing he placed a titanium dental implant to replace the missing tooth and made an implant-retained crown to match her natural teeth.

Several months later Mrs C’s lower molar tooth fractured and also needed replacing. Kit extracted the tooth and was able to place a dental implant directly into the socket. After healing, an implant crown was made to match the colour, lustre and translucency of her natural teeth. As Mrs C was happy with the fit and appearance, it was definitively fitted into place.

Mrs C was delighted with her treatment and left us a 5* Google review.
