What are the benefits of Spark Aligners?

April 20, 2023

Whether you’re an adult looking to improve the aesthetics of your smile or looking to correct an overbite, underbite, overcrowded teeth, widely spaced teeth or misaligned teeth for you or your child, Spark Aligners offer a clear alternative to traditional braces.

Here we outline eight benefits of Spark Aligners

  1. One of the biggest benefits of clear aligner treatment is the personalised approach. Our Specialist in orthodontics, Kostas Spathoulas, will talk to you about your goals and what to expect throughout treatment. He will perform a scan of your teeth using advanced 3D scanning technology to plan and create a series of Spark clear aligners. You wear each aligner for up to two weeks before progressing to the next in the series, gradually moving your teeth towards the projected final position.

  2. Spark aligners offer a highly specialised and sophisticated system that requires the knowledge and skill of an orthodontist, unlike other systems. Your personalised treatment plan may include adding attachments to refine movement; these could be special attachments, orthodontic bands or metallic orthodontic buttons, which can sometimes be fitted behind your teeth. Reviews and amendments will ensure your aligners carefully control movement until the desired result is achieved.

  3. Spark aligners are made from TruGENTM lightweight material, which make the aligners more transparent, more durable, more comfortable and more resistant to stains.

  4. Spark aligners are designed with scalloped, smooth edges that make them comfortable and to have better contact with your teeth, which provides advanced and sustained force retention.

  5. Spark aligners can be removed for eating and drinking (and to brush your teeth), enabling you to eat your usual food and drink throughout orthodontic treatment. You need to wear the aligners for a minimum of 20–22 hours a day, but as they can be easily removed, unlike traditional braces, this offers you some flexibility, especially if eating 'staining' curries, coffee and red wine! Just place them in their protective case to keep them safe and reinsert them afterwards.

  6. Spark aligners are easy to keep clean, unlike traditional braces where food particles may get caught in the wires and brackets. You simply remove your aligners when brushing your teeth, and this can remind you to give them a clean as well, perhaps before bedtime. However, do not treat your aligners like you do your teeth - toothpaste can be too abrasive and can scratch the clear surface, making them less translucent. Instead, brush your aligners with a soft-bristled brush (not your usual toothbrush) and gentle, clear liquid soap to remove any debris or food particles that have accumulated during the day. Rinse thoroughly with cool water after brushing. Do not use heavy cleaning solutions or very hot or boiling water as this can damage the surface and shape of your aligners.

  7. Spark aligner treatment usually involves less visits to your orthodontist than traditional braces. At your first fit appointment you will be given your series of Spark Aligners to take home. You wear each set for 7 to 10 days, until it becomes 'passive', then move onto the next in the series. Your teeth will be moved by each set of Spark Aligners in accordance with your personalised treatment plan. After approximately six to twelve weeks from the date your first Spark Aligner was fitted, you return to see Kostas for review appointments and any adjustments needed.

  8. Spark aligners are designed for more efficient and effective tooth movement, often resulting in quicker treatment time. This will vary between each person, but the average treatment time is six to eighteen months. Once your teeth have been straightened, it is best to have permanent fixed retainers fitted behind your teeth to maintain this correction. You will also have three pairs of Spark XR retainers made to take home to wear at night as part of your bespoke treatment plan to stabilise your teeth in their new position and prevent any future relapse.
