Whitening and tooth-coloured fillings to restore

August 05, 2021

Mr P beforeMr P had most of his dental work done over 25 years ago, with just repairs since then. He wanted to improve the colour of his teeth and change his amalgam (silver) fillings for tooth-coloured fillings, so he booked in a new patient consultation with Kit Spears at Elmsleigh House.

Kit listened to Mr P’s concerns and performed a thorough assessment of his teeth. Kit discussed his findings with Mr P and together they agreed a treatment plan.

Mr P lowerKit confirmed that Mr P had a total of sixteen amalgam fillings in fourteen teeth, which would be replaced with tooth-coloured fillings.

Kit discussed the pros and cons of filling material as amalgam fillings are more likely to fracture teeth. Composite tooth-coloured fillings would be bonded to the teeth, reducing the risk of tooth and filling fracture, and significantly improving their appearance.

Kit also advised that professional teeth whitening would improve the colour of Mr P’s natural teeth. He took impressions of Mr P’s teeth, and whitening trays were made to fit his teeth precisely.

Mr P was shown how to apply carbamide peroxide whitening gel to the trays and fit them securely in place. He took home his trays and sufficient whitening gel to wear the trays for two to fours hours each day, until he achieved the brighter shade desired.

Mr P colour match

You can see in the photograph that Mr P’s teeth matched an A3 tooth colour; after whitening his teeth had lightened to an A1 shade.

Mr P returned to see Kit, who replaced his amalgam fillings with new tooth-coloured resin fillings over two visits.

The composite bonding material was made to match Mr P’s whiter teeth, and shaped, contoured and polished to match the look and lustre of his natural teeth.

Mr P after lowerMr P also had a dental hygiene appointment for a thorough clean and was advised how to brush and floss effectively to remove plaque bacteria as there was some early gum disease between teeth where it is difficult to brush. Removing dental plaque (bacteria) that grow every day using dental floss will prevent gum disease as well as tooth decay.

Mr P maintains regular check-ups with Kit as well as dental hygiene appointments, and was so delighted with the results he left a 5* Google review!

“Outstanding! Clearly the best dentist I have ever visited. Superb facility, superb people. Cannot fault Elmsleigh House at all!” Mr P.
